"Postflight Briefing" - Finds for the Week January 31st 2015

Hey hey everybody. It's been a pretty good week for diecast finds, much better than last week. So let's dive right in..

First up, a couple of 75 Challenge cars I picked up on ebay for cheap..

Next, two new finds from Walmart, a mainline Lambo and Retro Entertainment Lotus

Another 75 Challenge vehicle that arrived today.

The latest batch of Hot Wheels from Walmart

And last but not least, a lot I won on ebay for a mere $4 shipped. Definitely the best deal of the week!

Lesney #08e-Ford Mustang Restoration

Hey folks. Just a quick post to show you a rare Mustang variation I made a while back and forgot to post LOL. Sorry for the light commentary, I'm exhausted tonight. Enjoy!

Going home from the wrecking yard.

The correct Lesney yellow base coat

It fell off its clip shortly after painting, ugh!! Had to redo it.

Came out nice though!

My signature original baseplate.

Lesney #75b-Ferrari Berlinetta Restoration #3

So as you might have noticed, I'm a big fan of this casting. In fact, it's my favorite diecast car period! It's just such a well done and beautiful casting, you can't help but love it. So when I discovered one lurking in the junkyard, I knew it was time to add another one to the collection. Maybe a copy of a very rare variation that I doubt I will ever be able to afford?

It needed some help being loaded on the trailer..

It's trailer hitch was broken off, but luckily this yard is well stocked, and another one was found!

The tired old Ferrari arrived back to the workshop, and the disassembly process began.

The donor car that provided its interior was completely beyond rescue, but donated one of its parts to a car that will live on. It was pretty gross!

But nothing an old toothbrush with some soap and water can't fix!

Now what is left of the old paint gets removed.

The junkyard was also kind enough to provide some original tires for the project! Here it is wearing its new shoes and ready for paint.

All primed and ready to go. (The paint booth charges by the hour, so its better to get multiple cars in at once! More on the Mustang in a later post...)

I try to keep my Lesney restorations as true to original as I can. This includes doing it like they did back in the day, with a yellow base coat before the red goes on. (It looks pretty good like that! I might have to do a yellow one someday.)

After a final coat of red paint, some silver trim detailing, and reassembly, here it is!

Here it is with the rest of the family. (I really like this casting... :) )

Matchbox 1968 Ford Mustang GT/CS California Special

I picked up some new Matchbox releases tonight, and every time I see a new model with chrome interior, it frustrates me to no end!!! Why do they bother making such nice models, in lovely colors and with accurate tampos, just to let it down with a chrome interior??

So I decided to change that, and this one came out so well, I might try it with some others.
I'm no Mustang collector, but I'm a sucker for brown/bronze cars, and I couldn't pass this one up!! I think I've improved it quite a bit, though I am working on gaining a steadier hand with the silver sharpie haha. What do you think?

Quick Project: Johnny Lightning 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback

I bought this car in that 3 for $1 sale I mentioned before. A mint condition Johnny Lightning Mustang. Only problem? It's missing a wheel. This super nice wheels are different from the typical Matchbox or Hot Wheels wheel. The hub is attached to the axle, and the decorative part of the wheel pops on top. So on this one, the top part had just popped off and was long gone. No worries though, I know just the thing for it!

It's such a nice model, I didn't want to dismiss it just for doing a Reliant Robin impersonation

It doesn't look as good as the original in my opinion, but at least there are four wheels now!
The reason for choosing these wheels is laziness. They were sitting on my workbench, and the axles didn't need to be modified to fit. I'm allowed to be lazy from time to time.

So I'm going to let the JB Weld dry and go enjoy a cigar and a beer. Hope you like my 10 minute custom.
